Tom Sachs creates evocative juxtapositions in Sony Outsider that betray an ambivalent relationship to the worlds of art, popular culture, and technology. Simultaneously enamored with and critical of these worlds, Sachs combines his perceptions of them with humorous and horrific results. A full-scale model of the Fat Man atomic bomb that references glamour-magazine spreads as much as weapons schematics, Sony Outsider is infused with a kind of comic-book hyperbole and playfulness that enables Sachs to explore issues such as cultural imperialism and exploitation in new and unexpected ways.
