Postmark: An Abstract Effect
PAST
28 MAR 1999 / 14 JUN 1999
In this exhibition a progression within abstract art becomes apparent. Working both toward and away from an earlier formalist tradition, the artists in this exhibition balance a conventional interest in materiality and form with their use of atypical mediums and techniques-at times creating work that in contrast to a discrete object, becomes dependent on the spaces surrounding it. Here, the possibilities of abstract art are extended: the importance of the eye in the art experience is superseded by a more visceral encounter with materials. The work performs a seduction that reminds us of the potential of color, form, space and texture.
