SITE Santa Fe is pleased to announce the return of SPREAD, SITE’s long-running special event designed to generate community-driven financial support to fund New Mexico artists.

After a short hiatus, SPREAD returns to SITE Santa Fe with a fully virtual iteration this spring. A signature SITE event since 2011, SPREAD is a unique initiative that provides visibility, career development support, and funding for New Mexico-based artists. Over the last nine years, SITE’s six SPREAD events have raised over $40,000 in direct support for artists.

Deadline for Artists to Apply to SPREAD 7.0 is December 4, 2020

First launched at SITE in 2011, SPREAD is a recurring dinner event designed to generate community-driven financial support to fund artistic innovation.

New Mexico artists working in any discipline and at any stage in their careers are invited to apply to become a SPREAD Finalist.

Applications are made through the SPREAD website until December 4, 2020. A jury of curators and artists (including a number of past SPREAD Finalists) will select six Finalists to advance to the SPREAD main event.

Finalists will be announced in late January 2021

On-line voting (for your favorite Finalist) will begin in March 2021

A virtual SPREAD event with the announcement of the winner will take place in April 2021.

BACKGROUND ON SPREAD

SPREAD begins with an application and a jurying process that leads to the selection of six SPREAD Finalist artists. SITE’s curators work closely with each Finalist to develop a short pitch and presentation introducing their work and making a case for funding.

The main SPREAD event took the form of a large-scale dinner with live presentations made by all of the Finalist artists. In the past, at each SPREAD event, over 300 diners paid a sliding-scale entrance fee (starting at $15) for which they received dinner and a ballot. During dinner the six finalist artists presented their proposals for yet-to-be-realized new projects. The SPREAD diners then voted for their favorite project.

At the end of dinner, the artist whose proposal received the most votes was awarded all of the funds collected at the door to realize their project.

SPREAD IN THE ERA OF COVID-19

Now that mass gatherings like SITE’s SPREAD dinner are not allowed as we adhere to current State Health Orders, we have reimagined SPREAD in a virtual format, with Finalist artists creating video pitch segments, with voting taking place online, and with a LIVE virtual event to announce our winner.
