RESOUNDING SILENTS: A showcase of women filmmakers with live music from Dovetail Orchestra
PAST
22 MAY 2021
Screening
8:30 PM
After a two-year hiatus, Santa Fe’s own Dovetail Orchestra takes to the Motorama stage for a magical night of silent films with live music. For this one-time performance, Dovetail Orchestra will be partnering with SITE Santa Fe and taking their inspiration from SITE’s participation in the Feminist Art Coalition by scoring innovative, women-directed silent shorts from the earliest years of cinema to the modern age. Directors whose work will be shown include pioneers like Germaine Dulac, Cleo Madison, Lotte Reiniger, Maya Deren, Alice Guy-Blanche, Lois Weber along with contemporary offerings by Deborah Fort and other Santa Fe women filmmakers.
Led by Santa Fe Composer-Conductor Ross Hamlin, the rotating cast of Dovetail Orchestra has carved out a unique niche for writing and performing music for lesser-seen early cinema gems, with a propensity for shorter works. The orchestra for this engagement will also be comprised largely of women musicians. Already possessing one of the most diverse stylistic palettes of any ensemble in the area, they will also be showcasing new material before the films begin.
