My Life in Art: Charles Ross with David Chickey

The subject of Charles Ross’ art is light itself. Using sunlight and starlight as its source, the work manifests experiences of primal solar color, and star geometry in sculptural form. Charles Ross’ fascination with light, time, and the space of the stars has given life to a rich artistic career that includes Star Axis, a major earthwork in New Mexico, begun in 1971 and nearing completion; more than 20 solar spectrum installations in the United States, Japan and Europe including the Dwan Light Sanctuary at the United World College, Montezuma, NM; Harvard Business School Chapel; Mieji University, Tokyo; National Museum of the American Indian, Washington, DC; and the Year of Solar Burns, a permanent installation at the Chateau d’Oiron, France. In 1982 he began an on-going series of paintings and drawings with dynamite that explore the behavior of light at the quantum level. He continues to make artwork with Solar Burns–impressions of time drawn by the sun itself.

Ross is joined by Radius Books’ David Chickey.
