John Gerrard

Internationally renowned multimedia artist John Gerrard's recent work reveals fascinating links between video game technology, landscapes, and basic training. His painstakingly detailed process explores the slippage between the "reality" found in immersive video game environments and the real-world danger of high tech military maneuvers.

Gerrard will discuss three recent commissions, Infinite Freedom Exercise (near Abadan, Iran) 2011, produced for Manchester International Festival 2011 and included in More Real?Live Fire Exercise, a collaboration with choreographer Wayne McGregor for the Royal Ballet, 2011; and Exercise (Djibouti) 2012, commissioned by Modern Art Oxford and Oxford University, and recently exhibited as part of the London 2012 Festival. The lecture will end with a brief overview of the series Animated Scene, shown as part of the Venice Biennial in 2009.

His work has been presented in solo exhibitions at Modern Art Oxford, Manchester International Festival, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh, Hirshhorn Museum + Sculpture Garden, and at La Biennale di Venezia, Italy (2009), among others. His work has been the subject of numerous international group exhibitions and two major monographs.

John Gerrard ((b.1974, Dublin) lives and works in Dublin, Ireland and Vienna, Austria, and is represented by Thomas Dane Gallery, London and Simon Preston Gallery. New York. For more information see johngerrard.net
