This presentation at Axle Contemporary is a culmination of Banks’ SITECenter project. In the Spring of 2017, he worked with college students from the Institute for American Indian Arts (IAIA) in Santa Fe and high school students from the Native American Community Academy (NACA) in Albuquerque. They explored historical occurrences in Native American history in relation to education and sports. This was done through design, silkscreen and athletics. The students learned printmaking from Chas Banks, designing their own team logos, which they then printed onto uniform jerseys, baseballs, and other memorabilia. The project culminated in a baseball game at Graves Park in Albuquerque on April 21st between the NACA Eagles and IAIA T-birds. Through these activities, the students learned mentorship, team building, while enhancing their creative and critical thinking skills. The exhibition at Axle will be a memorabilia shop featuring the jerseys, posters, pennants, commemorative baseballs, and programs from the collaboration as well as a video documentation of the game and project . The exhibition is a co-production between SITE Santa Fe and Axle Contemporary.

The work of Jamison Chas Banks was featured in the SITE Santa Fe Biennial, SITElines.2014: New Perspectives on Art of The Americas, entitled Unsettled Landscapes. In that show, he presented a new installation that investigated the relationship between the Louisiana Purchase, Napoleon’s exile, the exile of the Cherokee in Oklahoma, and his own Cherokee/Cayuga-Seneca family history. A fictional baseball game between the “Exiles” and the “Purchasers,” became a central part of Banks’ installation and a metaphor for contested territory.

SITEcenter is the education and outreach component of the SITElines exhibitions. SITElines exhibitions focus on art from the Americas in a biennial format. SITEcenter signals a commitment to tie the curatorial process with education outreach efforts and to create a deeper engagement within in the community of Santa Fe. SITEcenter programs include commissioning artists to work on projects within the community as well as lectures and events related to the themes of the exhibitions.
