Digest This!: Tosca's Kiss

Tosca’s Kiss: Opera and Resistance with Jennifer Rhodes and Grace Browning: An Opera Harpist with a Tasting by Cheesemongers

This program is sponsored in part by business council member Lannan Foundation

Though opera features the spectacular feats of the female voice, it often does so within narratives that undermine the agency of the female body: a staggering proportion of the world’s most frequently performed operas end in the death of their female protagonists. And yet, the operatic stage and form hold so much potential. Can the operatic imagination reframe the female body as a site of resistance and renewal?

Praised for her “superb technical acumen and sensitive musicality” (South Florida Classical Review), Grace Browning has established herself as a leading ensemble harpist, avid soloist, and passionate advocate for community engagement. Equally at home in symphonic and operatic literature, Grace is enjoying her first season Principal Harpist of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, and fourth summer season as tenured Principal Harpist of the Santa Fe Opera.

Jennifer Rhodes is Robert Belknap Core Faculty Fellow at Columbia University, where she teaches literature and leads Core Lab, an experimental arts workshop. She spends summers on the staff of the Santa Fe Opera, where she runs and writes subtitles and speaks frequently on opera and literature.

In the spirit of tailgating at the opera, SITE Santa Fe will partner with Cheesemongers of Santa Fe with a tasting of samplings of cheeses, charcuterie, jams, crackers, olives, dried fruits, and other accompaniments.

Doors open at 5:30 PM.
