Thomas Demand

Born in Munich in 1964, Thomas Demand lives and works in Berlin. Demand studied art the Staatliche Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and received an MFA from Goldsmiths College, London, in 1994. The artist is best known for photographs and films based on commonplace scenes often pulled from the mass media. Demand meticulously restages each scene in three dimensions using paper, cardboard, and cellophane. The result is recorded on camera, presenting an illusion of reality.

Demand's work has been exhibited in solo shows at the Hamburger Kun-stalle, The Museum of Modern Art; SITE SANTA FE; and the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin. His work has also been included in group exhibitions at the Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris; the Shanghai Art Museum; and The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Demand participated in the 50th Venice Biennale in 2003.

The Dissolve

A paradigm shift in contemporary art is rare and hard to recognize at its inception, but that is what curators Sarah Lewis and Daniel Belasco did in The Dissolve, SITE SANTA FE’s Eighth International Biennial. The curators presented a new sensibility in the art of our time, a mingling of up-to-the-minute technology and traditional visual arts (painting, drawing, and sculpture) with dance, music, and film. The fundamental form of this new work was animation, uniting the technological (the camera) with the handmade (drawing).
