Sherrie Levine is known for appropriating and recontextualizing famous works of art. Her photographs, drawings, paintings, and sculptures reference such artists and writers as Marcel Duchamp, Walker Evans, and Gustave Flaubert. Challenging modernist notions of originality and creative genius, Levine has stated that “the tension between the reference and the new work doesn’t really exist until the new work has an artistic presence of its own.”
