Jennifer Steinkamp manipulates light to "dematerialize architecture." Using a computer to project images onto existing forms, Steinkamp not only transforms architecture but also creates an entirely new structure. Often, these pieces work in conjunction with their viewers, who, as they walk around an installation, trigger motion sensors. These sensors, engineered by Steinkamp, activate changes in color or movement in the image.
Steinkamp received her BFA and her MFA from the Art Center College of Design. Her numerous solo exhibitions include the Greengrassi Gallery in London (1999), the Fremont Street Experience in Las Vegas (2000), and ACME in Los Angeles (2000). She has received several awards including three National Endowment for the Arts grants, two Rockefeller Foundation grants, and a CalArts Alpert Award in the Arts.
