BACK TO ARTISTS

Gilda Mantilla & Raimond Chaves

The collaboration of Gilda Mantilla and Raimond Chaves began in 2005 with their hundred-day trip across Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. This was followed by a second journey in June 2006 that traced the route of the Amazon River to the triple border of Peru, Colombia, and Brazil. The artists generated a cartography of the region, felt and experienced through the act of drawing, gathered in a series of vignettes known collectively as Dibujando America (Drawing America).

With the perspective afforded by time, for this exhibition the artists revisit the parts of the project that deal with the Amazon, eight years later, to create a new cartography in Mapa sobre mapa (Map Over Map), which links and remaps the original data through new relationships and connections. The subject is no longer the “Americas” as a contested and lived territory, but Dibujando América as a personal roadmap.

Unsettled Landscapes looked at the urgencies, political conditions and historical narratives that inform the work of contemporary artists across the Americas – from Nunavut to Tierra del Fuego. Through three themes – landscape, territory, and trade – this exhibition expresses the interconnections among representations of the land, movement across the land, and economies and resources derived from the land.
