Gianfranco Foschino’s mesmerizing works operate at the intersection of photography and cinema. Shooting with a video camera positioned at a fixed point, he captures the stillness and untouched beauty of the mountains and landscapes of his native Chile. In many of his videos, movement is nearly imperceptible. In fact, at first glance, videos like Fluxus can be mistaken for still images—an ambiguity emphasized by their manner of display. On flat screens inside wooden frames hanging on the wall, they look like paintings or backlit transparencies. These works generate a sense of tension, as if we are waiting for a dramatic event to occur. That event never happens, however, and we remain transfixed by the silence that surrounds the luscious visual details of distant landscapes.
