1964

Adriana Varejão’s paintings trace the historical and cultural narratives of her native Brazil. She explores the long history of hybridism in her country, including the cross-fertilization that occurred with China. Varejão’s Ruina de Charque – Nova Capela is a trompe l’oeil blend of Portuguese tile and Chinese porcelain. Symbolic of the human condition, images of meat, viscera, and blood ooze through tears and cracks in the kitchen and bathroom walls depicted by the artist.
