Shuvinai Ashoona

Lives and works in
(b. 1961, Cape Dorset, Nunavut) Shuvinai Ashoona is part of a new generation of Inuit artists working out of Kinngait Studios, Cape Dorset, Nunavut. The longest-running printmaking studio in Canada’s Arctic, Kinngait opened in 1958 as a way to replace incomes lost due to the collapse of the fur trade. In Composition (Over-looking Cape Dorset), fine lines delineate modest homes and other edifices, connected by electrical wires and curved gravel paths. The minimal homes are contrasted with the dark, layered, and cavernous land beyond. One of the first large-scale drawings to be made in Cape Dorset, its size captures the expansiveness of the community and its surroundings.
