Gilda Mantilla & Raimond Chaves
(b. 1967, Los Angeles; Lives and works in Lima, Peru, b.1963, Bogota, Colombia; Lives and works in Lima)
The collaboration of Gilda Mantilla and Raimond Chaves began in 2005 with their hundred-day trip across Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. This was followed by a second journey in June 2006 that traced the route of the Amazon River to the triple border of Peru, Colombia, and Brazil. The artists generated a cartography of the region, felt and experienced through the act of drawing, gathered in a series of vignettes known collectively as Dibujando America (Drawing America). With the perspective afforded by time, for this exhibition the artists revisit the parts of the project that deal with the Amazon, eight years later, to create a new cartography in Mapa sobre mapa (Map Over Map), which links and remaps the original data through new relationships and connections. The subject is no longer the “Americas” as a contested and lived territory, but Dibujando América as a personal roadmap.
