Angela Westwater is co-founder of the renowned New York gallery Sperone Westwater. Raised in Columbus, OH, Westwater received her BA in art history and political science at Smith College and her MA at New York University. From 1972 to 1975 she was managing editor at Artforum magazine. In 1975, she left Artforum to partner with legendary dealers Gian Enzo Sperone and Konrad Fischer. The trio opened Sperone Westwater with the intention of showing European avant-garde art alongside American artists. The gallery’s first seasons included exhibitions of Carl Andre, Gilbert and George, Mario Merz, Richard Long, Gerhard Richter, and Bruce Nauman, among others.
Today, almost 38 years later, Westwater continues to champion the gallery’s artists by encouraging the creation of artwork, its exhibition and circulation, and ultimately its placement in both private and public collections worldwide.
