SITElab 16: Nani Chacon: SPECTRUM
On view through Sun, Aug 21, 2022
SPECTRUM is a new body of work from artist Nani Chacon (b.1980 Chinle, Diné) that explores cultural repair and radical colonial resistance through masterful visual storytelling and re-telling. Composed of 10 newly commissioned large-scale paintings and a survey of Chacon’s public murals and personal archive, SPECTRUM draws inspiration from traditional Diné creation mythology, and blends this with Chacon’s own experiences as a contemporary Indigenous artist.

About the Musicians

Raul Pacheco is a Boyle Heights/Los Angeles native, singer, songwriter and original member of cultural music mashers Ozomatli that currently resides in New Mexico. His original compositions have appeared in numerous media outlets including award winning recordings, commercials and films. The three time Grammy winner continues to support social, political and artistic causes that aim to make the world a better place for all.

Luz Skylarker was raised on a steady diet of Earth Wind and Fire, 2 tone, música romántica and Etta James. She has been quoted saying “my soul sings in 3 genres— rocksteady, cumbia and hardcore— that serves as a foundation for my love of all music that has soul and depth.” Lately she has been revisiting songs that remind her of listening to Art Laboe on Sunday evenings while dreaming of her father’s lowered ‘63 vw bug with crimson crushed velvet bucket seats, brass buttons and her mom’s initials airbrushed on the passenger door. @luzskylarker
