As part of SITE Santa Fe’s opening weekend for the exhibition of Jeffrey Gibson: The Body Electric, Gibson will take the stage for a My Life in Art Talk with long-time friend and inspiration, artist Jaune Quick-to-See Smith.

Jaune Quick-to-See Smith is an internationally known as an artist, curator, lecturer, printmaker, professor, and cultural arts worker who uses humor and satire to examine myths, stereotypes, and the paradox of American Indian life. Born at St. Ignatius Mission, Smith holds an art education degree from Framingham State University, MA, and a Master’s degree in art from the University of New Mexico. Over the past 40 years, Smith has organized and curated over thirty Native exhibitions, given over 200 lectures at museums and universities internationally, and has shown in over 125 solo and 650 group exhibitions. Her work is part of collections at the Brooklyn Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, Quito, the Whitney Museum, the Walker Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, among others. Smith holds 5 honorary degrees and numerous awards such as: 1987 Academy of Art and Letters, Purchase Award, NY;1995 Painting Award, Fourth International Bienal, Cuenca, Ecuador S.A.; 1996 Joan Mitchell Foundation Award; 1997 Women’s Caucus for Art, Lifetime Achievement; 2005 New Mexico Governor’s Award; 2011 Inducted into the National Academy of Design; 2012 Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, Living Artist of Distinction; Honorary BA Degree, Salish Kootenai College, MT; 2018 Montana Governor’s Award; 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award in Printmaking, Southern Graphics Council International; 2019 Murray Reich Award, NY; 2020 United States Artists Fellowship, 2022 Medal of Distinction, Barnard, NY.

Jeffrey Gibson (b.1972, Colorado) is a celebrated multidisciplinary artist whose works are represented in over 20 permanent collections across the US. He is a member of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians and half Cherokee.
