Gregory Crewdson

Gregory Crewdson creates photographs that capture a moment in time; ambiguous moments that draw the viewer in through photographic beauty, through repulsion, through a kind of tension. Working in the suburban setting of Lee, Massachusetts, Crewdson takes a week to arrange a typical photographic “set.” In one photo, a teenager stands in a driveway, clutching a six-pack of beer, while transfixed in an otherworldly shaft of light; in another, a woman kneels dream-like in her living room, surrounded by a prolific garden of colorful flowers – which have seemingly grown overnight. About his work, Crewdson says, “I want to take what on the surface can appear to be ordinary or routine activity…and make it obsessive or irrational or inappropriate.”

Gregory Crewdson was born in 1962 in Brooklyn, New York. He received a BA from SUNY Purchase, New York and a MFA from the Yale School of Art, Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut. Since 1993, he has taught at Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut. He has had many one person exhibitions including Centro de Fotografía de la Universidad de Salamanca, Salamanca, Spain; Espacio Uno, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid, Spain; Marc Foxx Gallery, Los Angeles, California; and Gallery Charlotte Lund, Stockholm, Sweden. His participation in group exhibitions have included: Where: Allegories of Site in Contemporary Art, The Whitney Museum, New York, New York; Telling Tales, The Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia; 1997 Kwangju Biennale, Korea; and Digital Gardens, The Power Plant, Toronto, Canada.
