Cassils

Movements

Movements is a solo exhibition by Cassils, a transgender artist who makes their body the material and protagonist of their performances. Cassils' art contemplates the history(s) of LGBTQI+ violence, representation, struggle, survival, and empowerment. For Cassils, performance is a form of social sculpture: drawing from the idea that bodies are formed in relation to forces of power and social expectations, Cassils' work investigates historical contexts to examine the present moment.

Movements embodies the interstitial spaces of performance, photography, sound, and light. The title references the sequential stages of a musical score and social, political, physiological, and somatic movements. Movements includes a series of new works which translate Human Measure (2021-ongoing), Cassils' first contemporary dance, into a series of visceral visual and sonic installations, including Movement 1: Human Measure (2024), Movement 2: White Sands, New Mexico (2024), and Movement 3: Etched in Light (2024).
