Spring 2015

A Four-Part Exhibition Series in Celebration of SITE’s 20th Anniversary

Join us for 20 Years/20 Shows: SPRING, the first of a yearlong series of 20 shows including 15 exhibitions and 5 events. This series celebrates SITE’s dynamic exhibition history by reconnecting with artists who have exhibited with us over the years and inviting them to return to SITE to present new work. Artists featured in this first round of shows include: Gregory Crewdson, Deborah Grant, Roxy Paine, Mary Reid Kelley, Rose B. Simpson, and Jessica Stockholder.

Gregory Crewdson

THEN: In 2001 Gregory Crewdson had a solo exhibition at SITE featuring new photographs. Gregory Crewdson: Photographs (February 1, – May 27, 2001), was curated by Louis Grachos.

NOW: Gregory Crewdson presents Fireflies (1996/2006), a series of 61 black and white photographs, which has only been seen once before in its entirety.

Deborah Grant

THEN: In 2012, Deborah Grant exhibited Suicide Notes to the Self (2008). This large-scale painting and collage construction was featured in Agitated Histories (October 22, 2011-January 15, 2012), a group exhibition curated by Janet Dees and Irene Hofmann.

NOW: SITE will feature a selection from Christ It Ain’t Easy, Grant’s new body of work which premiered at the Drawing Center, New York in 2014.

Roxy Paine

THEN: In 2003 Roxy Paine had a large-scale solo exhibition at SITE. Roxy Paine: Second Nature (April 26-June 6, 2003) was organized by Joseph D. Ketner, from the Rose Art Museum, Brandeis University, Waltham, Massachusetts.

NOW: Roxy Paine presents Bastard Octopus (2015), a new large-scale diorama of a professional wrestling ring and stadium inspired by Roland Barthes’s writings about the spectacle of excess embodied in a professional wrestling match.

Mary Reid Kelley with Patrick Kelley

THEN: In 2010 Mary Reid Kelley presented You Make Me Iliad, a new commission for SITE’s Eighth International Biennial The Dissolve (June 20, 2010 – January 2, 2011), curated by Daniel Belasco and Sarah E. Lewis.

NOW: Mary Reid Kelley with Patrick Kelley will present two recent films and associated objects based on 19thcentury literary works.

Rose B. Simpson

THEN: In 2008 Rose B. Simpson collaborated with Nora Naranjo Morse and Eliza Naranjo Morse on a monumental and multi-site new commission for the Seventh International Biennial Lucky Number Seven 2008, curated by Lance Fung.

NOW: Simpson presents Alter, a new installation anchored by two monumental figurative mixed media sculptures. Alter is a metaphor for the process of gaining self-awareness and self-actualization.

Jessica Stockholder

THEN: In 2001, Jessica Stockholder created a room-sized new commission for SITE’s Fourth International Biennial Beau Monde: Toward a Redeemed Cosmopolitanism (July 14, 2001-January 6, 2002), curated by Dave Hickey.
